How has your understanding of the concept of belonging been shaped by the representation of relationships and events that you have encountered in the texts you have studied for the Area of Study: Belonging? Belonging requires an individual to build a connection with another person or group over time, these connections are often developed through shared experience and understanding. Peter Skrzyneckiââ¬â¢s poems; ââ¬Å"Feliks Skrzyneckiâ⬠(1975) and ââ¬Å"Migrant Hostelâ⬠(1975) offer various perspectives and representations on this concept. Ernest Hemingwayââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"A clean well lighted placeâ⬠(1926) and the picture ââ¬Å"Berlin Wallâ⬠by unknown (1973) compliment these perspectives and representations further. A lack of shared events and timeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The younger waiter believes he has ââ¬Å"no regard for those who have to work.â⬠On the contrary the older waiter also doesnââ¬â¢t belong to a family and attempts to explain ââ¬Å"he stays up because he likes itâ⬠ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s clean and well lightedâ⬠the light acting as a metaphorical parallel to the comfort the cafà © offers in his otherwise dark life. Seeing as the older waiter understands him he does his best to make the customer feel he belongs and build a relationship with him. He realises that not everyone shares the same perspective realising ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s not only a question of youthâ⬠but in this case a question of lack of relationships allowing sympathy and explaining his actions. ââ¬Å"Migrant Hostelâ⬠, gives the responder a perspective of the plight of migrants and the trouble they face in building relationships due to the events in their past and the lack of understanding in the world around them. The metaphor of the ââ¬Å"barrier at the main gateâ⬠¦ Pointed in reprimand or shameâ⬠demonstrates how their housing affects them. A person cannot belong if they feel shamed, furthermore they consider themselves ââ¬Å"birds of passageâ⬠with constant ââ¬Å"comings and goings.â⬠The constantly fluctuating events in their life results in an in-ability to form relationships as they have in-adequate time to form them, hindering belonging. Despite this shared ââ¬Å"memories of hunger and hateâ⬠allowing some belonging, the alliteration emphasises the hardship of
